How to Know God's Will in Decision Making

How to Know God's Will in Decision Making

I’d been a lonely church orphan for a few years when I’d finally narrowed it down to two churches. A new church tugged at my heart, but I reasoned for the more convenient service times of a larger church. I was torn, so I asked God where He wanted me to go.

I’ve learned that God is faithful to those who seek His will, and I hope to help you find His will in your life.

In Judges 6:36-40, Gideon asks God for a specific sign so he will know that it is truly God speaking to him, and that God would keep His promise to use Gideon to save Israel from oppression. In my confusion, I also asked God for a clear sign.  I wanted a church where I could meet other Christians, but as an introvert, meeting people is difficult. As I drove to church, I prayed:

“God, if this is truly the church you want me to attend, then please show me by making someone introduce themselves and talk to me. And ushers or the pastor’s wife don’t count!” After worship, the pastor announced fellowship time, a 10-minute break before the sermon when children go to Sunday school while adults gather in the lobby for coffee and snacks.

Despite the nervous pit in my stomach, I headed towards the lobby. I forced myself to make eye contact, and even whispered “hello” to at least two people. They smiled and continued walking. I shuffled to the snack table, pretending to be interested in crunchy, pre-packaged granola bars, but I returned to my seat alone and disappointed.

I was rummaging through my purse when an older gentleman with a welcoming smile stood in front of me. “Hi, my name is Ken. I think I’ve seen you before.”

Ken is a photography teacher at my daughter’s high school. More importantly, he is not an usher or the pastor’s wife! I’d finally found a home. But just like Gideon, a few weeks later, I needed reassurance. I met Mike that day. And I met Marcia the day convenience again tempted me, but I instead obeyed God.

My friends, God is not frustrated with those who seek His will with a pure heart, no matter how much reassurance we need. Learn from the heroes of Scripture and ask Him. God is always faithful in His perfect timing.
