Seek good, and not evil, that you may live — Amos 5:14
Amos 5 contains a serious warning to Israel. The people continued their religious gatherings, offerings, and songs, but injustice remained among them. The poor were mistreated, bribes were accepted, and justice was denied.
God called the people to seek Him, reject evil, love what is good, and establish justice. Their religious activities could not take the place of sincere obedience. Their worship had lost its meaning because it did not influence the way they lived or treated others.
The chapter also warns against false confidence. The people expected the day of the Lord to bring light, but Amos told them it would bring darkness because they continued to practise injustice. Religious identity could not protect them while they refused to change their ways.
Amos describes justice and righteousness as waters that should flow continually. Justice should not appear only in our words or on special occasions. It should be seen consistently in our decisions, relationships, and treatment of people who are vulnerable or treated unfairly.
Amos 5 reminds us that genuine worship is connected to everyday life. What we believe, what we say, and how we live should agree.
