When God Stops You

Lessons from Numbers 22:33 – 41 and 23:1-4

Sometimes the thing frustrating us may actually be protecting us.

In Numbers 22:33-41, Balaam is on his way to meet Balak, but his donkey keeps stopping. To Balaam, the donkey looks stubborn and annoying. But what Balaam cannot see is that the angel of the Lord is standing in the road with a drawn sword. The donkey sees the danger before Balaam does.

What felt like resistance was really mercy.

That is one of the most powerful lessons from this passage: God sees what we do not see. We often judge situations by what is visible. We get upset when doors close, plans slow down, people correct us, or things do not move as quickly as we hoped. But sometimes God is using the interruption to protect us from something we are not able to recognize yet.

Balaam had to learn humility. He thought he was the one in control, but God used a donkey to get his attention. That reminds us that God can speak through unexpected places, people, and situations. A warning may not always come in the way we expect. It may come through a delay, a conversation, a feeling of conviction, a closed opportunity, or even someone we did not expect to teach us anything.

Then in Numbers 23:1–4, Balaam prepares sacrifices and waits for God to speak. This part reminds us that we should not rush to say or do what others want from us. Balak wanted Balaam to curse Israel, but Balaam could not simply speak according to pressure or payment. He had to speak only what God allowed.

That is a daily lesson for us too. We live in a world where people may pressure us to say what is popular, convenient, or beneficial. But God calls us to seek Him first. Our words, choices, and direction should be shaped by obedience, not by fear of disappointing others.

So when your path is blocked, pause before you complain. When something slows you down, ask God what He may be showing you. When you feel pressure to please people, remember that obedience to God matters most.

God’s interruptions are not always rejection. Sometimes they are protection. Sometimes they are correction. Sometimes they are guidance.

The challenge is to stay humble enough to listen.
